Puppy Care Sheet
Remember to take your new puppy to the Vet within 48 hours of taking him home. Use this page as a shopping list to make sure you are prepared and have all you need to make your puppy safe and happy in his new home.
Nutrients
Food: Choose a quality food made for puppies and appropriate to the size your dog will be when grown. Example: Large Breed Puppy Food. |
Water: Fresh, clean water should be available at all times. |
Pooper Scooper: May use a stick handle design for cleaning the yard and/or convenient Mutt Mitt for picking up after your pet when you are out in public. |
Enzyme Cleaners: Remove "Puppy Accidents" odor and stains from carpet & furniture. |
Grooming
Brushes & Combs: Start grooming early! |
Nail Clipper: Just trim the tips. Blood Stop will stop accidents. |
Flea Preventative: Offers protection from fleas. Advantage, Bio Spot, Zodiac Spot On, Advantix, Frontline. Be sure to treat your yard and house. |
Shampoo & Cologne: Shampoo made for humans is too drying for your puppy's skin. Use shampoo made for puppies. |
Furnishings
Kennel Cab: Easier for travel, trips to the vet, visits around town. |
Dishes: Clean dishes for food and for water. |
Bed/Pad: It is helpful to get puppy used to his own bed--not your furniture. May also be used in a cage. |
Doghouse: Dogs housed outside need proper shelter. A doghouse should contain bedding of straw for winter. During summer months bedding should be of cedar as it is cooler and will help to repel fleas. |
Cage: Helpful in housebreaking puppy. It becomes his haven. |
Entertainment & Exercise
Chews: Pig Ears, Cow Ears, Puppy Teething Rings, Puppy Chicken Teething Sticks, and Puppy Toro Chews keep puppy busy, but never leave puppy unattended while chewing these treats. |
Toys: Interactive Toys offer companionship, stimulation and exercise. Latex are soft & durable. Kong and Nylabones last a long time. Rope toys help clean teeth. |
Treats: Nutro Training Bits, Chicken/Rice Sticks, Lamb & Rice Sticks are helpful rewards when housebreaking. |
Collar & Lead: I.D. tag with name and phone number. City License. Never leave puppy in cage with collar on. |
Tie Out Cable & Stake |
Books: Books about dogs. The more you know, the more fun you will have! |
