Hydrangea

Don't Wait Until They Bloom To Change The Color.

If you do nothing to your hydrangea and you do not have favorable soil, over time you will have few, small blossoms that will be green and blend with the plant.  To get the most enjoyment from your plants, feed them with a high phosphorous fertilizer on a regular basis to encourage more and bigger blooms.  Add soil conditioners in the spring and fall to control the color of the blossom.  Here in the upper Midwest, you can apply soil conditioners as early as Mid March or April.  If you use Aluminum Sulphate you can not apply phosphate for two months.  The
Aluminum binds with the phosphate and makes it unavailable.  Therefore, you will want to make your Aluminum Sulphate application as early as you can so that you can start fertilizing two months later.
