Small Breed Puppies Are Especially At Risk For Developing Hypoglycemia

• Stress from moving a puppy from one place to another can cause the puppy to not want to eat.
• Constantly holding your new puppy when they first arrive home can cause additional stress.
• New puppies need time to play and/or exercise and also time to rest.
• You, as the owner, have a respondsibility to make sure your puppy eats and drinks.
• Small Breed puppies have to have numerous small meals (3-5 per day) throughout the day.
• Give your new puppy Nutri-Cal as directed unitl the tube is gone.
• Yogurt and/or Cottage Cheese in small amounts mixed with food also helps in getting your puppy to eat well.
• IMPORTANT!!!!  Without these small meals throughout the day, your puppy can become hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)!
• Symptoms of hypoglycemia include:
• Lethargic activity
• Unsteady while standing and/or walking
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Low energy level
• Weakness
• Hypoglycemia, if not treated, can cause your puppy to go into shock and in some cases can be fatal.
• If your Teske puppy becomes hypoglycemic, contact us right away.  If it is after business hours and the puppy is very sick, contact an emergency vet or after hours vet.  If you are not local, and your pup shows signs of hypoglycemia, contact your vet right away.
